❤️ How to Help Someone Experiencing Homelessness

A short guide for the PS 236 Community

This guide was created after one of our teachers had a meaningful experience on the way to school.

On a very cold morning, the teacher saw someone lying on the sidewalk completely wrapped in a blanket. Unsure what to do, they called 311 and learned it was a Code Blue day — meaning the city sends help so people can get warm and safe. That simple call made a difference, and it reminded us that small actions truly matter.

If you see someone freezing on the street that might need help, there are things you can do!

Here are simple, safe steps anyone in the PS 236 community can take:

1. Call 311

Share the location and describe what you see. During Code Blue weather, outreach teams respond quickly to bring people to warmth and shelter.

2. Show Kindness

If you feel safe, you can gently ask if the person needs anything. A few caring words can mean a lot.

3. Offer Small Essentials

If you have them, items like snacks, water, warm socks, gloves, or hand warmers can help immediately.

4. Know Local Resources

Nearby supports include BronxWorks, The Living Room Drop-In Center, and the PATH Intake Center for families.

Just like our teacher’s moment of compassion, any one of us can make a positive difference.Thank you to the entire PS 236 Community for choosing care, dignity, and kindness.
